1898 - Ragtime Music Becomes Popular
The genre of ragtime music first became popular in the 1890’s and peaked from 1898-1914. The music’s distinct characteristic is having a “ragged” rhythm. Ragtime music originated in African-American communities in St. Louis. One notable ragtime composer was Scott Joplin, who was known as the “King of Ragtime”. Copyright Act of 1909
The Copyright Act of 1909 was the first revision to copyright laws since 1790.
